Scope of Services:
Limnotek contributed to a technical assessment of critical loads of acidity (CL) to surface waters as part of the smelter modernization by Rio Tinto Alcan Ltd (RTA) in Kitimat, British Columbia. Limnotek developed and implemented water sampling methods to acquire chemical data from lakes and streams over a wide geographic area where there is limited to no ground access. Special equipment and procedures were developed to deploy instruments and samplers from helicopters. Safety and scientific control standards were developed by Limnotek under strict safety rules set by RTA and aviation authorities. Limnotek contributed to the selection of special laboratories for analysis of the samples and worked with those labs to ensure high quality data needed for calculation of CL. Those calculations were run by ESSA Technologies Ltd and specialists from Trent University. Further analysis was used in development of an environmental effects monitoring plan based on adaptive management. Limnotek was part of the multidisciplinary team that developed that plan in consultation with regulatory authorities.
Relevance of the Project:
Data acquisition from this project and the environmental effects monitoring plan are a critical part of analyses and decisions used to approve SO2 emission that may result from the Kitimat Modernization Project. Results form the basis of ongoing environmental monitoring and coordination with regulatory authorities to ensure environmental quality in the Kitimat – Terrace corridor.
